Name: Kymar Stewart ’19

Hometown: Shelton, Connecticut

Major: Management

Company: Princess Glam Hair

I’ve always had a passion for hair. But the idea to turn it into a business came during a conversation about hair with a few of my friends in Bentley’s Multicultural Center my freshman year. Coming to a business school like Bentley, with all it has to offer, really motivated me to turn my passion into my new job and career.

What is Princess Glam Hair?

Princess Glam Hair provides quality virgin hair extensions for all hair types. The hair will last for six months to a year with proper care and maintenance. We currently have Brazilian Straight virgin hair and Brazilian Body Wave virgin hair.

What makes your product so valuable in today’s world?

The hair extensions help enhance a person’s beauty, which can boost confidence because they know their hair looks amazing.

Once you came up with your idea, what steps did you take to launch the business?

With the help of my friends at Bentley, I was able to post information about my business and product on each of their social media accounts. Also, word of mouth is very important in the hair industry, so I made sure I put the word out people I know.

There are so many new ideas being developed every day. What do you feel sets a successful product apart from an unsuccessful one?

If customers know that the owner of the product cares about them, it will ultimately make their product successful. Customers need to be reminded that they are not only being used for profit; there should be some connection between the owner of the product and the consumer.

What have been some of your biggest challenges in becoming an entrepreneur?

I have faced tons of challenges since I became an entrepreneur—and a few of the challenges I was not expecting. In addition to managing my business and personal life, challenges include not getting the feedback from my family or peers I would like to receive about the starting of my business, and the thought of quitting and closing down my business.

What do you like most about being an entrepreneur?

I love that I am my own boss. I have the responsibility of making sure that everything is running and operating to my liking, and I am the one who bears the responsibility if anything goes wrong.

What qualities do you think successful entrepreneurs possess?

To be a successful entrepreneur, you need to be determined, fearless and passionate about what you’re doing.

In what ways has your Bentley education uniquely prepared you to become an entrepreneur?

I changed my major to management due to my new passion of being a business owner. Here at Bentley, I was able to select a major that geared exactly to the knowledge of what I need to be successful. In addition, Bentley offers classes that any entrepreneur can use to better build and maintain their brand or company.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve received as you have developed your business?

Never quit, never back down, and never be afraid to put yourself out there. If you’re thinking about starting a business, I encourage you to stay strong and determined about what you want and how passionate you are. Don’t be afraid to be yourself, because the right people will love and support you for it.
